Lawyer Assistance Programs

You may find yourself studying or practicing law in a different state than you thought you would live in! Most U.S. states have a lawyer assistance program. These programs are designed to provide mental health and substance use support to law students, lawyers, attorneys, and judges. Some programs offer free psychotherapy services from licensed mental health professionals, such as the Lawyer Assistance Program in Washington DC. Other programs offer peer support and guidance from trained attorneys. You may also find yourself calling the program for support or guidance if you are concerned about a colleague or a peer. The program may be able to provide you with the names and contact information for psychotherapists or treatment providers who are highly recommended and skilled with working with attorneys. How can I receive mental health help during law school?

Once you receive your acceptance:

If you are staying in your current city or state for law school:

-You may want to stick with your current psychotherapist or psychiatrist because they know you and they have a sense of your history.

-If you are moving cities or states for law school, you may want to investigate options for psychotherapists or psychiatrists in your new area.

-One starting point may be the College Counseling Center on your new campus. Some Law Schools have their own psychotherapist who specializes in working with law students. Other law schools may not have their own therapist. It is likely that they will have a therapist on campus who can provide some help for you.
